THE EXPERIENCE

STORIES OF THE RENAISSANCE

A Daughter's Courage By Teri Brandt

Our first trip to Renaissance Church as a family was to watch a powerful play about Jesus' crucifixion.  It was Easter 2009 and God gave me courage through my daughter that day. I had prayed 'the prayer' many times before…silently secretly during my on again off again trips to church.  But never really had 'faith'.

My testimony is not what I would consider a 'powerful' one…I was never a bad person. Of course, I had sinned, but generally speaking had always been a pretty decent caring person.  Nonetheless, deep down somewhere I knew going to church and living for God was what we are supposed to do. As a family we went to church from time to time.  But it was not a priority by any means.  If my football team was televised Sunday morning – forget church.  I was staying home routing on my team.  However, I wanted my kids to grow up differently then I did.  I wanted them to have the good exposure of church.

After a while, time passed and church just got pushed aside.  Life was too busy.  I needed Sundays to relax at home.  Next thing I knew, aside from Christmas, we hadn't been to church in well over a year. We moved and our kids instantly connected with our neighbor's kids.  They would attend church with them from time to time.  So when the Easter play came up and our neighbors invited us, we figured it was a good, non-threatening way to check it out.

Easter 2009 is a time I will never forget.  We all bowed our heads and prayed and again I silently secretly prayed 'the prayer'.  But when it came time to raise our hands, mine didn't go up, until I peaked at my 7-year old daughter and noticed her hand was up.  She may not have fully comprehended what she was doing that night, but she was a gift of courage from God for me. After the Easter play, we decided Renaissance was worth trying out on a Sunday.  The people had been so inviting and friendly.  We started attending regularly and I started to learn more and more.  I learned that baptism was the next step to take after being saved.  So, I wanted to do it.  I wanted to show God that this time I wasn't too embarrassed.

Then, we started attending a small group and we were challenged to pray and spend time with God.  It is an awesome feeling to start my day with a long talk with God.  I also started reading my bible this summer and even taking notes.  Then, we started attending the prayer nights at Renaissance.  I found it was a very peaceful time with God in His house.   It's been almost a year now and I can truly, honestly say I now have faith.  I have surrendered.  I am living for the Lord and trying to be a better servant each day.  I love increasing my knowledge base about God and His word.  I try to encourage others to talk to God.  I am blessed that God has placed people in my path to challenge me to draw closer to Him.
